CATEGORY CLASH
Sixteen words. Four hidden squads. 180 seconds on the clock. Sort every word from your unit into its true category and climb the ranks — Private to General.
Why category battles build strong readers
Sorting words into meaning groups forces the brain to compare, contrast, and connect — the fastest route to deep vocabulary. Each rank drills one consistent skill, always against the 180-second clock.
Sort with the labels
Category names are visible, and recruits carry 2 hints that reveal a word's definition. Build the mental file folders first — matching each word to a named group and saying why it belongs.
Assemble the squads
The four targets are known, but you must gather each squad of four yourself. This drills flexible thinking: one word, weighed against fifteen rivals.
Crack the hidden code
No labels. Captains infer the categories from the words alone — true deduction, with four shields for near-misses. "One away!" feedback trains precision.
Name the intelligence
Two shields only, and after every captured squad, Generals must name the category themselves. Producing the label — not just recognizing it — locks vocabulary in for good.
Take the clash to the table
Every word squad on this page doubles as a printable deck.
Cut-apart category card decks, sort-and-glue mission sheets, and blank "build your own squad" pages for all nine CKLA Grade 5 units and six Amplify Grade 6 units — drawn from the very same word pools that power this game.
